Japanese parents not only hope for different levels of education for sons and daughters, they explicitly state the purpose of education as being different for the two sexes. About two-fifths of the parents who want to send a son to university regard the primary goal as general education, compared to two-thirds for a daughter(Office of the Prime Minister, Japan, 1982b).

In sum, Japanese parents' socialization attitudes and educational aspirations for children are strongly linked to the sex of the child, and this is often mirrored in the school setting as well. Parents are likely to view university education as job preparation for sons and general education for daughters.

また、必ずしも東アジア的というわけではなく、韓国と比較しても高等教育でのsex segregationが大きいという議論は面白かった。
